Senator Colston asked the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 20 November 1978:

(   1 ) Whether fresh instructions have been issued to overseas posts in relation to lost or stolen passports as outlined in the Commonwealth Ombudsman's Second Annual Report 1979, page 84.

(2)   If so, what was the nature of the instructions.


Senator Carrick - The Foreign Minister has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Yes. On 29 May 1978, immediately following discussions with the Ombudsman, a circular was sent to all overseas posts drawing their attention to circumstances in which, in the event of loss or theft of an Australian passport, consular officers may approve the issue of a replacement passport of limited validity, pending confirmation of identity and Australian Citizenship of the applicant.
