Senator CAVANAGH asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Navy, upon notice -

1.   Has the Minister seen the report of the former Captain of the " Melbourne " that the " Melbourne " is now completely out of date and of no value as an aircraft carrier?

2.   Did Captain Robertson also express the views that (a) we have no modern aircraft carrier; (b) a new modern carrier would be a large task for the Royal Australian Navy to man in the next five years; (c) the Navy's ships are undermanned; and its shore establishments under strength; and (d) the Navy's methods of management and discipline are twenty-five years behind the times, and it is over committed for the resources available to it?

3.   Will the Minister comment on these views, which suggest a sorry state of defence preparedness?
