Senator McLEAY (South Australia) (Postmaster-General) . - in reply - I appreciate the remarks of our legal friend, Senator A. J. McLachlan, but I assure the Senate that the Government has given the points raised by the honorable senator very serious consideration. The Government realizes the drastic nature of the provisions of the bill, but, as Senator A.J. McLachlan said, we are at war, and we are living in difficult times. The Government is not concerned with individuals, but merely desires to protect itself against fraudulent acts which may have been committed since the outbreak of war.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Bill read a second time and passed through its remaining stages without amendment or debate.

Sitting suspended from9.4 to 9.55 p.m.
