Senator J V MACDONALD (QUEENSLAND) asked the Minister representing the AttorneyGeneral and Minister for Industry, upon notice -

1.   In view of the conflicting statements in regard to the Australian position on the 40- hour week, will the Minister say whether the Commonwealth Government's support of the 40-hour week at the International Labour Conference was a conditional support?

2.   If not, will the Government take steps to ratify the International Labour Conventions and then bring forward the necessary legislation to give effect to them?

3.   If this is not possible, what arc the reasons which prevent the Commonwealth Parliament from being able to ratify the conventions ?
