Senator BRENNAN (VICTORIA) (Minister without portfolio assisting the Minister for Commerce) - The Minister for Commerce has furnished the following answers to the honorable senator's questions : -

1.   Information has been received about a Norwegian ship only.

2.   No. Licences under the Commonwealth Whaling Act are required for operation in Commonwealth territorial waters. The State of Western Australia has been urged to pass this legislation and, at the recent Premiere Conference, the States adopted a recommendation to pass whaling legislation as soon as possible.

3.   Yes. The Commonwealth Whaling Act, so far as Commonwealth territorial waters are concerned, is being administered bythe Department of Commerce. The Commonwealth has no jurisdiction over fisheries in State territorial waters.
