Senator NEEDHAM (Western Australia.) . - I have no hesitation in supporting the second reading of the bill. If the Standing Orders permitted, I should like to move an amendment to increase the amount of pension. I hope that the day is not far distant when the miserable pittance of £1 a week now being paid to persons entitled to the pension, will be increased.

Senator Pearce - That matter is not covered by this bill.

Senator NEEDHAM - If I set out to discuss that subject I have no doubt that the Leader of the Senate, following the course he adoptedjust now when another bill was before the Senate, would advise an honorable senator on his own side to raise a point of order. I am heartily in favour of the bill.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Bill read a second time, and passed through its remaining stages without amendment or debate.
