Senator CRAWFORD (QueenslandHonorary Minister) . - I cannot accept the request moved by Senator Payne. For many years road-rollers have been made in Australia, but, owing to the severe competition from abroad, it has been found necessary, after full investigation, to increase the duty as proposed in this item.

Senator Kingsmill - Is that because of an increase in wages ?

Senator CRAWFORD - The effect of the higher wages paid in Australia applies to every item in the schedule. Wages and the cost of raw material in

Australia are approximately 100 per cent, higher than in Great Britain and European countries generally.

Senator Ogden - Largely as the result of the tariff.

Senator CRAWFORD - That is a matter of opinion. Great Britain herself is feeling the effect of competition from other countries, and has had to grant additional protection to a number of her industries. Many orders for road-rollers have gone abroad during recent years. If we desire to preserve this Australian industry, the increased duties are 'necessary.
