Senator RUSSELL - The answers are-

1.   In April, 1914, an arrangement was made with the Department of Trade and Customs for the analytical work required in connexion with the examination of powellised sleepers to be effected by officers of that Department. The officers so engaged also carry out analyses for Customs purposes which were formerly made by the State Analyst.

2.   The cost of the Analytical Branch is about £600 per annum. The work required by the Department of Home Affairs is almost completed for the present, but the Minister for Trade and Customs has decidedto continue the Branch for Customs purposes.
