Mr Garrick (BATMAN, VICTORIA) asked the Minister representing the Minister for Administrative Services, upon notice:

(   1 ) Has the Minister's attention been drawn to the widely held belief that members' telephones have been connected to various electronic recording and listening devices.

(2)   Is it a fact that the staff of some members and public servants are loath to use the Parliamentary telephone system when discussing confidential matters.

(3)   Is it possible that telephone tapping could exist without the knowledge of the Minister or his Ministerial colleagues.

Mr Street - The Minister for Administrative Services has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:
