Mr Snedden asked the Prime Minister, upon notice:

What percentage of works of art owned by the Government which are intended to be exhibited in the National Art Gallery has been publicly displayed in Australia since they have been acquired by the Government.

Mr Whitlam - The answer to the right honourable member's question is as follows:

The National Collection was begun soon after Federation but it was not until recent times that information was kept about the public display of works of art from the Collection. It is not possible, therefore, to give the percentage figure requested by the right honourable member.

Works of art from the Collection have, however, been included from time to time in exhibitions in State and regional galleries. They have also been displayed in official establishments in Australia such as Government House and The Lodge in Canberra, and Admiralty House and KirribillHouse in Sydney.

The National Collection is being developed towards the opening of the Australian National Gallery, and while for many Australians this will be their first opportunity to sec the Collection, it is worth mentioning that illustrations of many works in the collection have appeared in numerous readilyavailable Australian art books and journals and in other widely circulated publications.

For some time the Australian National Gallery has also mounted an annual exhibition of recent acquisitions of Australian art in the Canberra Theatre Centre Gallery. The exhibition is held normally over the months of January and February to coincide with the major tourist inflow to the National Capital, and it is advertised in "The Canberra Times" and local tourist literature. The right honourable member will know of my interest in these matters. See my question of 24 February 1971 (Hansard page 624) and my answers on 27 March 1973 (Hansard page 760). 13 December 1973 (Hansard pages 4778-84) and of today (supra).
