Mr O'Keefe asked the Minister for Health, upon notice:

(   1 ) Has the Government's contribution to cancer research been reduced for 1974-75.

(2)   If so, is this causing great concern to medical men conducting research.

(3)   Does this dreaded disease claim 17 per cent of deaths taking place in Australia.

(4)   If the position is as stated, will he immediately investigate this situation and make every effort to secure additional funds for the increased research so necessary in this field.

Dr Everingham - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(   1 ) The major portion of Australian Government funds for medical research is made through the Medical Research Endowment Fund on the advice of the National Health and Medical Research Council. The amount of funds provided through the Medical Research Endowment Fund for cancer research has been increased, viz.-


(2)   Not applicable.

(3)   The latest figures, i.e. 1972, show 17 per cent of deaths were caused by malignant neoplasms.

(4)   Not applicable- see ( 1 ).
