Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for External Territories, upon notice:

How many (a) taxi licences and (b) 'bus licences were granted in 1970 to (i) expatriates and (ii) indigenes in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea?


Mr Barnes (MCPHERSON, QUEENSLAND) (Minister for External Territories) The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

The matter referred to is one which falls within the authority of the Assistant Ministerial Member for Transport in the House of Assembly for Papua and New Guinea. The Administrator on the advice pf the Assistant Ministerial Member for Transport has provided the following information -

(a) Eighteen taxi licences were granted in 1970 as follows:

(i) Expatriates- Nil

(ii) Indigenes 2- Wewak 8- Kieta

Indigenes and expatriates joint ventures 2 - Popondetta 6 - Goroka = (b) Four Motor omnibus certificates were issued during the same year as follows:

(i) Expatriates 2 - Goroka/Lae 2-^Rabaul

(ii) Indigenes - Nil
