Mr MCMAHON (LOWE, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Labour and National Service) - 1 am sure that the honorable member will be aware that competition for the sale of coal on the international market is very keen, and that even -a small reduction in .the excise duty could very well mean that we could not only sustain but increase the Australian share of the market. As the honorable gentleman also will be aware, about 800 miners are engaged in the production of coal for export, and the abolition or even a reduction, however slight, of the excise would help them considerably. Consequently, the Government has agreed to abolish the excise on exported coal and also to adopt certain other measures including administrative changes. I hope to be able soon to make a statement of the Government's intention. An amendment of the relevant legislation win be needed before the proposed abolition can be implemented.
