Mr ROBERTON (RIVERINA, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Social Services) - I remind the honorable member for Port Adelaide that in the course of my second-reading speech on the bill to amend the Social Services Act, I said that the increased payments would be effective as from the first day after the bill had received the Royal Assent. I am informed that the Royal Assent is now being sought and my department is in a position to effect payment as from the first pay day after it. has been granted. I think it will be received in the course of the next few days, if not the next few hours; and the department is ready to meet the situation. If and when- there are any adverse physical difficulties, the payment will be made retrospective to the first pay day- after the Royal Assent is given.
