Mr DEDMAN (CORIO, VICTORIA) (Minister for Post-war Reconstruction) - That matter has been considered by the Minister for Supply and Shipping. The Commonwealth Government has no constitutional power in peace-time to fix a flat rate for petrol throughout Australia, although it is true that it could do so temporarily under the National Security Act. However, "because some petrol companies operate in only a small way and distribute supplies only in the capital cities and the larger companies supply country areas as well as the cities, it would be obviously unfair to declare a flat rate, which. . would differentiate between the rates of profit of companies operating in the same trade.
