Mr CALWELL (MELBOURNE, VICTORIA) - Will the Minister for Munitions adopt an invariable rule that all persons associated with the work of his department shall be paid by the Commonwealth? Will heensure that the Director-General of Munitions, Mr. Essing ton Lewis, is made a public servant in the fullest sense, instead of working for the Commonwealth and being paid by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited ?

Mr MAKIN - Many men rendering wonderful service to the Commonwealth are not being paid by the Commonwealth. No person has devoted himself more loyally to the service of the Commonwealth than has Mr. Essington Lewis. I shall give consideration to the honorable member's suggestion.
