Mr CASEY (Corio) (Assistant Treasurer) . - The object of the vote is to procure a vessel suitable for exploratory work in regard to pelagic or surface swimming fish. A further vote of £5,000 will be provided for under " Miscellaneous Services " for the carrying out of tests. The vessel to be used is of a special type and should not be confused with the Endeavour, in which various experiments were conducted some years ago with regard to semi-demersal, or bottomswimming fish. Plans and specifications have been procured from Britain, Canada and other parts of the world, with a view to, getting the best type of vessel available for the work, and when these have been further considered tenders will be called, the desire being to have the vessel built as expeditiously as possible.
