Mr BEASLEY (West Sydney) . - The Prime Minister (Mr. Lyons) should inform honorable members why it is necessary to move that an appropriation of revenue be made in connexion with this bill. The committee is entitled to know what expenditure is likely to be involved. The Government was elected on a pledge to reduce expenditure, and already it is asking for authority to embark upon new expenditure. The money to be spent must come from the taxpayers, and honorable members opposite are always asking that relief be given to the taxpayers, and the alleged burdens lifted from industry. A government which is always talking of economy, and has reduced wages and living conditions, should be careful before involving the country in greater expenditure by introducing a measure of this kind.
