Mr E RILEY (SOUTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice -

1.   What was the cost of the three guns transferred from Garden Island to H.M.A.S. Australia just prior to the sinking of that vessel ?

2.   Was it not possible to retain the guns and use them for Defence purposes?

Mr BOWDEN - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow: -

1.   The guns referred to were received as .part of the Australia's equipment, and the cost was included in the total cost of the ship.

2.   The Naval and Military authorities, both in Australia and Great Britain, were consulted, and the guns cannot bc utilized for defence purposes as ammunition for them is no longer being manufactured.
