408  Senator Cash: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship—

(1) How much land is proposed to be cleared to house the planned Northam Detention Centre facility.

(2) What due diligence did the department engage in relating to the suitability of the site prior to making a public announcement that it intended to transfer 1 500 male detainees to the location.

(3) What were the terms of reference required to be satisfied in the due diligence exercise.

(4) Is it usual for the department to advise the Minister of any constraints on a potential detention site; if not, why not.

(5) Did the department advise the Minister of any caveats in respect to the Northam site; if so, what were they.

(6) In hindsight, would it have been prudent for the department to have more thoroughly investigated adverse issues affecting the site; if not, should the department have paid greater heed to the constraints on the land.

409  Senator Cash: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship—

(1) What are the regional impacts of current migration targets and levels of net overseas migration.

(2) Does the department map or monitor the location of migrants (permanent or temporary) according to Australian Bureau of Statistics Collection Districts; if so, can a copy of these findings be provided; if not, why not.

(3) Does the department assess or review the effectiveness and impact of migration targets on Australian labour markets.

(4) How did the resource boom from 2006 to 2008 and the subsequent global financial crisis affect migration level targeting.

(5) Why did the department study the impacts of long term migration on the environment and was this paper made available to the Sustainable Population Strategy advisory panels.

(6) What are the department’s future forecasts of the demand for labour in Australia and are these projections consistent with Skills Australia; if not, why not.

(7) Has the department discussed, influenced or provided information to the sustainable population inquiry; if so, what information has been provided.

 

 410  Senator Adams: To ask the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy—With reference to advice that the town of Bridgetown in the Great Southern Area of Western Australia does not currently receive Radio National coverage:

(1) What plans exist to provide transmission towers to extend Radio National coverage to Bridgetown.

(2) What is the timeline for that coverage provision.
