PETITIONSThe following 13 petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators indicated, were received: Senator Vallentine, 2 petitions similar in wording, from 15 and 43 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate ensure the protection of the Otway forests in Victoria and refuse any licence to export woodchips from the Otways. Senator Zakharov, from 90 petitioners praying that the Senate legislate to close the joint Australian-United States electronic communications facilities at the Watsonia Army Barracks, Victoria. Senator Giles, from 10 petitioners praying that the Senate urge the Government to introduce a ban on smoking on commercial flights of less than 90 minutes duration. Senator Devlin, from 243 petitioners praying that the lease of the Pine Gap Defence Space Research Facility be terminated and that the future use of the facility be subject to public debate and ratification by the Parliament. Senator Walters, from 24 petitioners praying that the Senate ensure the stability of Tasmania's forestry industry by requesting the Government to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments. Senator Durack, from 52 petitioners praying that the Senate act to protect society from moral pollution and its harmful effects. Senators Boswell, Brownhill, Sir John Carrick, Durack, Hamer and MacGibbon, from 23, 10, 17, 12, 25 and 28 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate urge the Government to rescind the Superannuation and Other Benefits Legislation Amendment Act 1986 so that pensions are restored to the 9 October 1986 level and consult with pensioner organisations before changing the terms of Commonwealth superannuation schemes. | |
