ELECTION OF DEPUTY-PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES

The Leader of the Government (Senator Button) moved-That the Senate do now proceed to elect a Deputy-President and Chairman of Committees.

Question-put and passed.

Senator Button moved-That Senator Tate be appointed Deputy-President and Chairman of Committees.

Which motion was seconded by the Minister for Community Services (Senator Grimes).

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) moved-That Senator Hamer be appointed Deputy-President and Chairman of Committees.

Which motion was seconded by Senator Durack.

And Senators Tate and Hamer having addressed themselves to the Senate-

The Senate thereupon proceeded to ballot; and the ballot being concluded, the President reported the result, as follows:

Senator Hamer... 37 votes

Senator Tate... 34 votes

and declared Senator Hamer elected as Deputy-President and Chairman of Committees.

Senator Hamer returned his acknowledgements to the Senate for the honour conferred upon him and was congratulated by Senators Tate, Button, Chaney, the Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Chipp), the Leader of the National Party of Australia in the Senate (Senator Collard) and the President.
