Senator RYAN (Victoria) (20:07): The opposition does not support the amendments moved by Senator Xenophon. In short, I note that Senator Xenophon earlier commended the work of the Remuneration Tribunal in recent months. The opposition agrees that the current legislation allows the tribunal to conduct investigations as it sees fit. Everything Senator Xenophon has proposed is quite within the powers of the tribunal to conduct at the moment. The very independence that parliament has granted the tribunal is critical to generating the public confidence that I think we all share with Senator Xenophon. The opposition does not see the need to mandate a particular course of action for the now independent Remuneration Tribunal. We will not be supporting the amendments.
