Senator HARRADINE (4:00 PM)
—The point that Senator Faulkner made to the chamber is a valid one. Obviously this is an urgent motion. I had not thought of the point that was, by interjection, made by another senator—that it had to be dealt with and disposed of today. I now accept that point. I would seek to amend the proposal so that, rather than it being referred to a select committee, the matter is referred to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee for inquiry and report on or before 7 October 2004. The motion refers to `implications of these statements for the findings of the Senate Select Committee on Certain Maritime Incident'. I would add `and for policy'. The 14 points contained in the motion would not be required, because they would be contained in standing orders governing the actions of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee. I really would appeal to the opposition to have a look at referring the matter to that committee. It is important that there is no hint that the inquiry is being conducted by a stacked committee. The evidence will come out. Presumably, they can call for it. I strongly recommend to the Labor Party that they take this amendment and follow it through. I will now be supporting Senator Faulkner's motion for the suspension of standing orders, because it is a valid point that he makes about time.
