Senator TROETH (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) (5:38 PM) —I again thank honourable senators for their comments. I emphasise that the Australian Federal Police and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2004 is an important and integral part of the government's efforts to protect Australians from terrorist attacks and to consolidate and enhance national security initiatives. It is the culmination of a process that began with the horrific events in the United States on 11 September 2001 and in Bali a year later. This bill will finalise the integration of the Australian Protective Service with the Australian Federal Police and enhance the ability of the Australian Federal Police to investigate state offences incidental to multijurisdictional crime.
