Senator HILL (Minister for Defence) (12:35 PM) —The government does not support the amendment, not because we think there is anything particularly wrong with the goal that is being sought but because we do not think it is necessary. Senator Greig is seeking to amend a provision of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act to include this obligation. It seems to us that under that legislation the inspector-general has oversight and does report in any event. So it is difficult for us to see that this amendment adds much to what is already the situation. On that basis, we do not see a reason to support it.

Question negatived.

Bill agreed to.

Bill reported without amendment; report adopted.
