The PRESIDENT (6:55 PM) —The Select Committee on a Certain Maritime Incident, by a letter dated 15 May 2002, under the signature of the chair, Senator Cook, has raised a matter of privilege. The committee believes that there may have been interference with a witness before the committee. The committee indicates that it has conducted a preliminary investigation of the matter, as required by Senate privilege resolution 1, part 18, and has concluded that there is sufficient evidence that the witness may have been interfered with. Where a committee, after conducting a preliminary investigation, as required by resolution 1, part 18, comes to such a conclusion, this is regarded as sufficiently indicating that the matter meets the criteria which I am required to consider in making a determination under standing order 81: whether a motion to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee should be given precedence. I therefore determine that such a motion to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee under standing order 81 may have precedence. I table the letter from the committee. A notice of motion to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee may now be given.
