Senator ELLISON (Special Minister of State) (11:47 AM) —For the record, the government opposes this amendment on the grounds I previously outlined in relation to the debate on the Public Service Bill. It is an amendment which will not really help those women who want to work on a temporary basis in the APS. The government believes that its proposal would be much more beneficial to those women who wanted to work on a temporary basis in the APS. I ask the Democrats to think about that when they look at their approach to this amendment. I also reiterate the point that the McLeod committee was not at odds with what the government is proposing, and that was a committee which was cited with favour by the opposition. We will not take it any further, but the government remains opposed to this amendment.
