Senator MACKAY —My question is to Senator Newman, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women. Can the minister confirm that on 1 October the number of women's organisations funded through the Office of the Status of Women will fall from over 20 to just four? Following cuts to 0SW of 40 per cent and cuts to the grants provided by the organisation of 50 per cent, doesn't this signal the final nail in the coffin for the Office of the Status of Women? Is this why Ms Pru Goward has announced her resignation less than two years into her contract—because leading an organisation that has no status with the current government has become such a farce?

Senator NEWMAN (Family and Community Services; Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women) —The answer to the question is no.

Senator MACKAY —Madam Prexident, I ask a supplementary question. Can the minister advise who will replace Ms Goward and when that announcement will be made? Can the minister also reassure the Senate that the appointment will not be another Howard crony who will drag women's policy further back to the 1950s?

Senator Alston —Madam President, I rise on a point of order. I have no objection to an additional question being asked, but how that can possibly be a supplementary question arising out of a one-word answer `No' I would have thought was beyond even the opposition's creativity.

The PRESIDENT —Order! It is a question that arises from the original question—it certainly does not arise from the answer—in that it refers to the same person as in the original question.

Senator NEWMAN (Family and Community Services; Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women) —I will not dignify such a disgraceful attack on a public official with an answer.
