Senator GREIG (10:40 PM) —I am very conscious that 20 years from now our children will look back on this dark night and think, `What on earth were people thinking back then?' They will wonder how it is that we could possibly have thought that the continued destruction of our native forests was warranted or necessary. When they look back and perhaps pore over the debate which has gone on for so long and which will continue, they will see that the Democrats were there fighting for native forests, as our supporters have called on us to do for 22 years.

This is not the end of the environmental push by environmentally minded people to preserve our forests. They will be motivated by tonight's decision like never before. We condemn this bill, which will echo for another 20 years.

Question put:

That the bill be now read a third time.
