Senator MACKAY (4:38 PM)
—Let me try to make this simple for the minister.
Senator Kemp
—It would be easy for you, Senator!
Senator MACKAY
—Let me try to make it simple for you. Local government does not know how the GST is going to impact on it. It does not know.
Senator Calvert interjecting—
Senator MACKAY
—In terms of nominal charges where services are provided, Senator Calvert, local government does not know which services they are going to apply to. The simple question is this: is the government still of the view that where a nominal charge for a community service is provided that service will be still be subject to a GST? Local government does not know the answer and the state associations do not know the answer. So the question is: how will the GST impact on local government? If you do not know—I do not think the government does know at this point how it will apply, and I agree with Senator Brown that this is somewhat of an
outrage—can you tell us when you will know and when this matter will be resolved?
