Senator Robert Ray asked the Minister representing the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, upon notice, on 10 March 1999:

(1) What has been the total cost to the department in the 1997-98 financial year of legal advice obtained from the Attorney-General's Department.

(2) What has been the total cost to the department in the 1997-98 financial year of legal advice obtained by the department from other sources.


Senator Alston (Communications, Information Technology and the Arts) —The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

In respect of those areas of the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry that were part of the Department of Primary Industries and Energy in the 1997-98 financial year:

(1) Total payments made for legal services obtained from the Attorney-General's Department were $1,580,625.00.

(2) Total payments made for legal services obtained from other sources were $318,894.00.
