Senator O'Brien
asked the Minister representing the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, upon notice, on 11 November 1998:
(1) How many industry advisory bodies are there in the Primary Industries and Energy portfolio.
(2) (a) What is the membership of each body; (b) how are members selected; and (c) how often does each body meet.
(3) Can a schedule of meetings be provided for each body since March 1996.
(4) Has the Minister attended all meetings of each body; if not, which meetings has the Minister attended.
(5) Does the Government provide funding to these industry advisory bodies; if so, how much funding has been provided to each body since March 1996 and how does each body use the funding.

—The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:
(1) 45 industry advisory bodies.

Rural Adjustment Scheme Advisory Council (RASAC) | Mr Neil Inall (Chairman); Mr Ross Donald; Mr Brian Plain; Ms Fran Rowe; Ms Margaret Thomson; Mr John Watson; Mr Bernard Wonder and Dr Roger Stone. | The members are selected by the Minister after consultation with the States and Territories NFF. Special Merino Export Committee | While there are no formal appointments to the Committee it consists of representatives of the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders, the Australian Council of Livestock Agents, the Australian Livestock Exporters' Association and AFFA. | Therefore, due to the lack of formal requirements, it is difficult to provide an official number of members. | The Committee usually meets yearly to review the previous merino ram selling season and the administrative requirements for the coming season. |

The process of selecting members involves full consultation between the Department of Primary Industries and Energy, and industry. The Department then seeks the formal approval of the Minister to the proposed appointments. | At this stage the NPIDG has been meeting monthly in order to progress key elements of the activities of the Program, such as finalising the Business Plan and considering applications for funding. It is envisaged the frequency of meetings will reduce now the Business Plan has been released, and applications are likely to be placed in funding rounds. |
