To the Honourable, the President and Members of the Senate assembled in Parliament:

This petition of certain residents of the State of South Australia notes with serious concern the proposal to establish a radioactive waste repository in the Billa Kalina Region. We object strongly to our region being used as a dumping ground for radioactive waste, particularly that from interstate. The petitioners believe that long distance transportation of radioactive waste represents an unacceptable risk and that the establishment of a repository in the region represents a long term threat to residents, tourists, the environment and cultural and business interests.

Your petitioners therefore request that the Senate act to ensure that a radioactive waste repository is not built in our region and that a waste management regime not based on long distance transportation be developed.

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
