Motion (by Senator Bourne)—as amended, by leave—agreed to:

That the Senate, recalling that 10 December 1998 is the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations:

(a) reaffirms the deep and enduring commitment of the Australian Parliament and people to the universal and fundamental human rights set out in the declaration as a birthright for all peoples and all nations;

(b) deplores the violation of human rights wherever and whenever this occurs; and

(c) pledges to give wholehearted support to the principles enshrined in the declaration and to promote the full realisation of human rights for all people throughout the world.
