Senator BROWN
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes that:
(i) the words of former Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, in 1962 that, `we never pushed the question of self-determination with determination' in relation to West Papua (Irian Jaya) remain true, and
(ii) recent demonstrations in Jakarta and elsewhere underscore a strong movement by West Papuans seeking political freedoms in 1998; and
(b) calls on the Government to reinvigorate Australia's approach to the West Papuan freedom movement by moving to ensure a fully enfranchised vote on self-determination in West Papua.
