Motion (by Senator Allison) agreed to:

That the Senate—

(a) notes that:

(i) Visy Industries Pty Ltd is establishing a new pulp mill in New South Wales which will process plantation timber rather than virgin native timber,

(ii) the mill will recycle water, reduce chemical use and will not use chlorine in its operations,

(iii) this value-adding operation stands in stark contrast to the $400 million worth of unprocessed woodchips that Australia exports annually, and

(iv) companies such as Kimberley-Clark manufacture so-called recycled paper that actually includes content from virgin native forests and pre-consumer waste;

(b) congratulates Visy Industries Pty Ltd for persisting with efforts to produce genuine recycled paper in light of the Coalition's actions which have discouraged its production and consumption, for example, by rescinding the sales tax exemption for recycled paper; and

(c) urges the Coalition to reintroduce sales tax exemption for recycled paper so that Australia's native forests can be protected from woodchipping.
