- QUESTIONS ON NOTICE

Senator Margetts
asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 12 March 1998:
Can details be provided of the exact number of Australian Defence Force personnel who have been assigned to the Gulf area since February 1998, together with a breakdown of the numbers of personnel from each unit, the place where they are usually based when in Australia and the activities that they will undertake whilst they are in the Gulf region.
Senator Newman (Social Security)
—The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:
Up to 24 March 1998, a total of 247 ADF personnel had been assigned to the Gulf area. Many of those personnel, particularly RAAF aircrew transited into and out of the Gulf during transport operations.
On 24 March 1998, 167 assigned ADF personnel were in the Gulf area, comprising mainly Special Forces, Air Force personnel, operational support staff and Liaison Officers. Although there will be some routine variations, the numbers in the area are not expected to change significantly.
A breakdown of ADF personnel in the Gulf area and their tasks is provided in the attached table.
