Senator STOTT DESPOJA
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes:
(i) the potentially serious consequences of the Year 2000 computer bug,
(ii) the possibility of considerable economic and social costs from this phenomenon, and
(iii) with concern, the report by James Riley in the Australian of 10 March 1998 of the apathy setting in over this phenomenon;
(b) expresses its concern that the Government is not taking a leading role in assisting the Australian community to understand and deal with this phenomenon; and
(c) notes that the Government has allowed another 6 months to pass without concerted action and has kept quarterly progress reports to itself.
