Senator LEES
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes:
(i) the high degree of public concern about the Government's regulation of alternative and complementary medicines, as evident from the large amount of correspondence received by Senator Lees on this issue, including a petition signed by 5 000 people,
(ii) that there is some degree of confusion among consumers about the role and responsibilities of the Government in the regulation of complementary medicines;
(b) recognises the need for consumers, small business owners and others involved with the complementary medical products industry to have access to clear information about the laws and regulations governing the manufacture, retail and promotion of complementary medicines; and
(c) requests that the Government produce a plain English guide to the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, and accompanying regulations, to enable consumers, manufacturers and retailers to obtain clear and concise information about the role of the Government in the regulation of complementary medicines and the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved with this sector of the therapeutic goods industry.
