Senator FAULKNER (Leader of the Opposition in the Senate)(6.42 p.m.) —Before we move off this particular issue, I have noticed some press speculation literally within the last 24 hours about proposals the government might have in relation to the Merit Protection Commissioner. I would be interested, given the amendments that have found favour with the committee, whether it is the government's intention and whether an assurance can be given that we will have a full-time Merit Protection Commissioner. That is an assurance I would like to receive from the minister.
