Motion (by Senator Chris Evans, at the request of Senator Faulkner) agreed to:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   SBS TV has won the ABU Prize for Television's Best Sports Programme announced at the 34th General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, Seoul, on 21 October 1997 for its coverage of the 1996 World Mountain Bike Championship in Cairns,

   (ii)   in recent months SBS has also won the following United Nations Peace Media Awards for Excellence, announced on 3 October 1997:

      (a)   Best Radio Report: SBS Radio's `World View' program entitled `East Timor—Disbelief' about the killing of five Australian journalists in 1975,

      (b)   Best TV Report: SBS TV's international current affairs program `Dateline', for its story entitled `Trading human rights' about Australia's place in Asia and human rights verses trade, and

      (c)   Best TV, Indigenous category: SBS TV national current affairs program `Insight', for its story entitled `Larrakia' about a land title claim by the Larrakia people over the foreshores of Darwin amid accusations that Australian backyards could be next; and

(b)   congratulates the Special Broadcasting Service for canvassing such issues and for doing so in a manner which has received both international and national recognition for excellence.
