Senator STOTT DESPOJA
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes that the results of the October 1997 AGB Neilson McNair poll which found that:
(i) 91 per cent of people believed spending on universities should be either increased or maintained,
(ii) 65 per cent believe that Australia should be spending more on higher education, and
(iii) 68 per cent believe that increased funding for the higher education system should come from the Government; and
(b) calls on the Federal Government to heed the strong public support for university teaching and research and to increase public funding to higher education.
