Senator BROWN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate condemns the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement because it:

(a)   delivers 94 per cent of assessed forest to industry and only 6 per cent to conservation;

(b)   allows unlimited woodchip exports;

(c)   protects only 1 per cent of Tasmania in new national parks and none at all in World Heritage areas;

(d)   strips the Commonwealth of its powers to protect forests, through compensation commitments and ensuing action, including legislation, so that it will be unable to act on such matters as World Heritage values, National Estate values, the need for export licences for woodchipping and any requirement for environmental impact assessments;

(e)   legitimises clearfelling of pure rainforests and some of the world's tallest trees;

(f)   approves the clearing of native forests for plantations; and

(g)   hands $70 million to forest industries, but offers no compensation to tourism and service industries for opportunities, including job creation, lost.
