Senator BOURNE (Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate notes that:

(a)   24 October 1997 marks Amnesty International's Candle Day, commemorating Amnesty's work to free all prisoners of conscience, people who are imprisoned because of their beliefs or because of their colour, gender, ethnic origin, language or religion, provided they have neither used nor advocated violence;

(b)   Amnesty International also campaigns:

   (i)   to ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners,

   (ii)   to end torture, disappearances, political killings and executions, and

   (iii)   to promote the protection of human rights generally; and

(c)   the Amnesty International Parliamentary Group (AIPG) is the largest of the parliamentary groups worldwide whose work seeks to ensure human rights are not removed from our political agenda and proves that a commitment to human rights transcends politics and is truly representative of a multi-partisan approach.
