Senator MURRAY(12.24 p.m.) —This comes from the Western Australian Liberal manual of excellent control of meetings and outcomes prior to people like Senator Campbell contributing to its partial reform. I will see what his reaction is, but I would be very surprised if Senator Campbell were to defend this with any passion. It is the most extraordinary thing I have seen in a long time. I am sure it was introduced merely to give us some light entertainment in this heavy debate.

We took about one nanosecond to decide that Senator Sherry's amendment was dead on. I concur with the remarks and the humour that accompanied his promotion of his amendment. It almost implied as the bill is presently that they are going to appoint people but their opinions do not really matter; if you have the chair you have everything. Imagine! Just give Bill Scales that kind of power and authority and we would really be right in the cart. Apparently, there are people even worse than that out there in terms of the ideological position he takes. So thank you, Senator Sherry and Labor. It is an excellent amendment.
