Senator WOODLEY —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   congratulates Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTAR) for the successful launch of its Queensland branch in Brisbane on 31 August 1997;

(b)   notes that the widest possible representation of the Queensland community was present to lend its support to the indigenous people and express its concern about the Federal Government's 10-point Wik legislation;

(c)   supports pastoralists such as Kerry and Camilla Cowley, from Bollon in south-west Queensland, who helped launch ANTAR and who have worked with the Gunggari people to establish native title over their property; and

(d)   recommends that:

   (i)   all Australians should understand the debate about native title, expressed as follows in the words of Camilla Cowley, speaking about the Gunggari people: `They wanted some place to call their own to take their young people for cultural camps and activities, to help address some of the problems all our society is having. They had no desire or intention to take my home, or anyone else's', and

   (ii)   disputes over native title be resolved by face-to-face discussion and not by extinguishing native title.
