Senator KERNOT (Leader of the Australian Democrats) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the following matters be referred to the Legal and Constitutional References Committee for inquiry and report:

(1)   The desirability of Australia becoming a republic with an Australian as Head of State and the process by which that might best occur, including:

   (a)   the circumstances and the timeframe in which the move to a republic might occur; and

   (b)   the most appropriate republican model to be put to the Australian people at a referendum.

(2)   That the committee seek submissions and present an interim report to the Senate by 23 October 1997, recommending a list of witnesses who represent a broad range of views and who may be invited to express those views in a forum to be determined, which may include appearance before the Senate.

(3)   After completion of the process outlined in (2) above, the committee hold public hearings throughout Australia canvassing as broad a range of views as possible.

(4)   That the committee present a final report to the Senate by the last sitting day in March 1998 recommending questions which should be put to the Australian people at a referendum.
