Senator CARR —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   expresses its outrage at recommendations contained in the Industry Commission's draft report on the textile, clothing and footwear industries; and

(b)   notes that:

   (i)   if the Government chose to implement these recommendations, it would result in massive job losses in Victoria amongst a particularly vulnerable group of workers,

(ii)   migrant women, being the majority of textile, clothing and footwear workers, would be unable to find alternative employment,

(iii)   Victoria employs more than half the workers in the textile, clothing and footwear industry in Australia, and

(iv)   the loss of 43 000 jobs would:

      (a)   have a devastating effect on the individuals concerned, their families and their communities,

      (b)   result in increases to an already unacceptable level of unemployment, and

      (c)   also result in the loss of critical industrial infrastructure in regional Victorian centres such as Geelong, Wangaratta, the Latrobe Valley, Bendigo, Ballarat and Warnambool.
