Senator LEES (Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats)(8.46 p.m.) —While indicating that we will be supporting Senator Bolkus on amendments 66 and 67, I must take this opportunity to ask why he is withdrawing the amendments relating to truth in political advertising. I would have thought that that was an incredibly important part of the ballot. If the Democrats had realised that he was going to withdraw those amendments, we would have had amendments drawn up that at least reflected what is the case in South Australia—that is, a person must not, during the relevant period in relation to an election, authorise the printing, publishing or distribution of any matter relating to the ballot containing a statement which contains inaccurate and misleading statement of fact. I just ask Senator Bolkus why he has withdrawn his amendments.
